My History With Social Media

Social media has always been a touchy topic in my household because my mom is a Private Investigator and knows about the lack of privacy among the internet. My mom has never been fond of me having social media so my first account on social media was Instagram in 7th grade without her knowing. I only had Instagram for a short amount of time because I ended up having to delete it when my mom found out that I have been using it. I started a new account on Instagram about the start of my Freshman year. I have actively used Instagram ever since then. I use it to keep in touch with friends I have made out of state at softball camps and clinics. Social media is convenient for me for this reason. It is very easy to keep up with friends from out of state when you can just check what they are posting every once in a while.
I also actively use snapchat for the same reason. As most people against snapchat believe that snapchat is unnecessary and it is just as simple to take a picture and send it in a text, I do not agree with that whatsoever. I have enjoyed using Instagram and snapchat to keep in touch with friends.
Within the last year I have began using Twitter also to keep in touch with friends. Twitter has also been more convenient to keep on track for softball tournaments. Many tournament directors no longer send out emails with schedules or even updates on rain delays and other information. Instead of tournament directors sending emails to every coach in a tournament, tournament directors have asked all of us to follow the tournament account and receive updates from there. It is amazing to me how much technology has evolved to allow us to access those types of things so much easier and quicker.
Without this evolution of technology I can not even imagine how I could keep in touch with friends and family out of state. When Instagram first began direct messaging I was someone completely against it, but I never realized how convenient it would be. If a friend gets a new phone number, their Instagram is still the same and it is very quick and simple to send them a message there to ask for their number. They same goes for snapchat and twitter, I have probably utilized all of these to send direct messages
Another way the technology has dramatically affected my life is when it comes to college softball. Being from Michigan and wanting to go to a college out of state it is hard for those out of state college coaches to watch me. This problem was solved by me emailing them all of the time with videos and keeping in contact with them over social media. Several girls actively use youtube to post their recruiting videos and send links to coaches to make it simpler for the coaches. Without youtube or even email accessible to us, college softball would be a completely different game because coaches would never know who wanted to go to their school or be able to watch good athletes play.
Technology has positively influenced my life and with my mom being a private investigator I have learned a great deal about your personal information that should not be on the internet. With that being said, nobody has privacy on the internet. We as users of the internet, are however the ones in control of what information we are releasing to the world on the internet. We are also in control of how we want to use the internet.
